Alright, so I’ve moved my blog to www.kimpansdesign.co.nr, so head over there instead =)

Alternate routes and reward idea.

Okay, this is idea that I came up with last night and evolved later that night. First off, I will show you a basic map layout. Take a good look at this image before continuing reading, by doing so, you’ll understand the things I try to explain.

Alright, first I want to tell you that RED lines are only RED to show you what line overlap what line. Now let’s begin. The players start off at the same location (at first I had the idea that the player meet up and starts at different locations). After killing some zombies the players have to make a decision.(First alternate choose) Either wait for the elevator and defend themselves against hordes of zombies, or just jump out of the window and take the path that does not need any waiting or horde killing.

However, taking this easy path comes with a long way to walk, and might meet up with some special infected or many zombies.

It depends on the AI Director. But if you choose to wait for the elevator and kill the hordes that attack you. You are rewarded with a path of ease. This path is also on higher level then the other path. And this path will also take you directly to the saferoom (aka. checkpoint/new map).
So this choice have to be taken from the players.

If some choose to wait for the elevator all by himself, he risk to die and the other players wont be able to help him since the jumped down from the window.

When a alternate route is given, I try to design the map so that when you have choosen a path, you can not go back and choose the other one. Just like with this window, you jump down, and there is no going back.

Now to the second map.

The second map is quite different then the first one. Here, we have one path that is shorter AND filled with zombie horde events.
The other path is much longer. And as you can see the BLACK line (longer path) is overlapping the shorter RED path. This is kinda like a bridge, with roof and glass as walls. Since the walls are made of glass, it gives the player a new chance to go back to the RED path. But when the player has made this choice, there is NO going back. Even if he goes all the way back to when he made the first choice in this map.

He can’t, since they’ve locked the door when they went inside the building. So the player that jumped down, or the whole team, is forced to take the RED path. Hopefully they made the right choice. But let’s say that they didn’t jump down. They went to the third alternate route (bridge one counts). They face another choose. Either take the RED shorter one, with one big panic event, or take the longer one, with no events at all. By holding off and survive the horde, you are again rewarded with a path of ease.

Now, you also see that there is two safe rooms in this map, well, yes, yes there is, and I know exactly how it would work to use the landmarks and stuff like that. But i’m not sure yet if you are allowed to have 3 saferooms (start point counts) in one map. Otherwise if it does not work, I’ll have to redesign and make that both paths takes u to the same checkpoint, like in the first map.

I will add the final map when I’m done thinking…

Errors, errors and then errors…

Well, I’ve now putten my l4d campaign on hold, since I get these random engine and model errors. Honestly I have no idea what is causing them. But Im gonna wait until the official SSDK is released. Then I’ll get back to work.

Dead City Campaign

Yeah, I’ve been thinking about this for while now and I think I’ve gotten to a final product. However, Im to lazy to get into any super duper details so I will make this as simple and clear as possible.

Dead City Poster

Poster is obviously not done.

Story

1 month after first infection the survivors are at a safe location in a building. They have found out who and what caused the actual infection at the first place. It’s the ??? laboratory that invented the virus and caused the spreed.

The survivors plan to make it to the ??? laboratory building to find a cure. However they do not know if the building is secure or infected as the rest of the city.

Levels

First level starts off at a rooftop, they make it down to streetlevel and then walks toward the ??? building. Pretty much like No Mercy. They walk the streets and pass the infected shops.

After reaching the first saferoom they get underground to the sewers, since the tunnel they where suppose to take was blocked. They get up to street level again and gets to a saferoom.

As they get out of the saferoom a big explosion occurs. The ??? build falls down into peaces and big clouds of dust is coming the survivors way. The survivors realizes that if the infection came from that building, the dust clouds must contain the virus.

They reach another saferoom and decides to change direction to instead get out of the city as fast as possible. When they get out they face 1000s of zombies and they fight their way out. Almost out of the city, they see a news chopper flying by. They get up on a building and calls for help, the news chopper arrives and the survivors fights the hordes of zombies.

Conclusion

Survivors tries to get the cure for the infection but the building explodes and they decide to get out of the city. Chopper comes and picks them up=Happy ending.:amuse:

I email Valve and asked when the SDK update for L4D will be released. I got a replay saying that they are working at full to finish it and ship it. They will make a announcement when they are ready.
